Chronic shoulder pain and stiffness can be caused by any of the five major types of arthritis that typically affect the shoulder: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, posttraumatic arthritis, rotator cuff tear arthropathy, and avascular necrosis. All of these can cause pain, stiffness, difficulty sleeping, and the inability to do daily activities.
There are two joints in the shoulder, which can both be affected by arthritis.
One joint is located where the clavicle meets the tip of the shoulder blade. This is called the acromioclavicular (AC) joint. The other is where the head of the humerus fits into the scapula, called the glenohumeral joint. For both of these joints, pain can be caused by bone-on-bone contact and/or inflammation of the joints.
Although there is no cure for arthritis of the shoulder, through our advanced shoulder treatment, patients are able to manage pain and stay active in their lives. We focus on decreasing inflammation and pain so that patients can regain range of shoulder and arm motion. From there, we work with patients to help them strengthen the affected shoulder.
To decrease inflammation, we use a combination of natural inflammatory treatments and Corticosteroid injections. Range of motion is progressively restored and strength regained through our specialized stretching program and advanced strength and conditioning program.
Like all of our treatment programs at the Pain & Wellness Center, each advanced shoulder treatment is tailored to the individual, their needs, and their lifestyle. This individualized, yet comprehensive, approach not only improves joint function, but also aids in the halting of joint degeneration—ultimately keeping patients out of surgery for as long as possibly or indefinitely.
