Those suffering from chronic headaches—headaches occurring 15 or more days a month for at least three months—or episodic headaches—those that occur fewer than 15 times in a month—may experience one or more of the following types of headache.

HEADACHES & MIGRAINES

Tension headaches usually result from prolonged contraction of the muscles located at the junction of the lower portion of the back of the skull and the vertebrae in the upper neck.

Signs and symptoms can include:

  • Dull, aching head pain
  • The sensation of tightness or pressure across the forehead or on the sides and back of the head
  • Tenderness on the scalp, neck, and/or shoulder muscles
  • Loss of appetite
  • A tension headache can last from 30 minutes up to an entire week. They can be experienced sporadically or nearly all the time

Causes/Triggers can include:

  • Stress
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Poor posture
  • Working in awkward positions or holding one position for a long time
  • Jaw clenching

MIGRAINE HEADACHE

Migraines are brought about by changes in blood flow, which can be triggered by a variety of factors like smells, light, foods, weather, hormonal changes, and stress. It is important to know that this kind of headache does not always begin with pain. They can begin with nausea or the experience of visual disturbances, called a visual aura.

A migraine treatment plan will depend on the severity and frequency of migraines and other symptoms experienced by the patient. Those who experience frequent migraines may benefit from beta-blockers to reduce the frequency and severity of headaches.

Acupuncture has also been shown to be an effective treatment for migraines by reducing the pain and frequency of headaches. Recent studies have indicated lasting effects in the symptoms of patients with migraine headaches.

Signs and symptoms can include:

  • Moderate to severe pain that may be confined to one side of the head or may affect both sides
  • Head pain with a pulsating or throbbing quality
  • Pain that worsens with physical activity
  • Pain that interferes with regular daily activities
  • Nausea with or without vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light and/or sound
  • When left untreated, a migraine typically lasts from four to 72 hours with the frequency of which they occur varying from person to person

Causes/Triggers can include:

  • Hormonal changes (for women)
  • Foods
  • Stress
  • Sensory stimuli (i.e. bright lights or sun glare)
  • Changes in wake-sleep pattern
  • Physical factors (i.e. intense physical exertion)
  • Changes in environment (i.e. weather or barometric pressure)
  • Medications

CLUSTER HEADACHE

Cluster headaches are the least common type and they recur over a period of time called the “cluster period.” Someone suffering from cluster headaches may have a headache several times per day during the cluster period, which may last several weeks or months.

The precise cause of cluster headaches is still unknown, but abnormalities in the hypothalamus likely play a role. Abnormalities of the hypothalamus may explain the timing (during certain seasons) and cyclical nature of cluster headaches.

Signs and symptoms can include:

  • Recurring cluster periods often the same time each year
  • Severe pain in the night a couple of hours after going to bed
  • Pain that can be 100 times more severe than migraine pain
  • Red, tearing eyes
  • Nasal congestion and discharge
